The Teatro Comunale of Ferrara, built between 1773 and 1797, follows the general lines of the so called "teatro all'italiana" (Italian style theater). It is one of the most “harmonic” shaped theatrical architectures in Italy. The aim of this study is to show the role of the survey and of metric analysis as instruments of knowledge. The conversion of the historical measure and the identification of the geometric matrixes show a particular use of the oval in defining the drawing of the plan for ordering and hierarchically structuring the stage boxes. This oval shape is functional for a good enjoyment of the show.

Abstract

The Teatro Comunale of Ferrara, built between 1773 and 1797, follows the general lines of the so called "teatro all'italiana" (Italian style theater). It is one of the most “harmonic” shaped theatrical architectures in Italy. The aim of this study is to show the role of the survey and of metric analysis as instruments of knowledge. The conversion of the historical measure and the identification of the geometric matrixes show a particular use of the oval in defining the drawing of the plan for ordering and hierarchically structuring the stage boxes. This oval shape is functional for a good enjoyment of the show.
