The paper aims at investigating the effect of lubrication-cooling condition in industrial finish face milling operations. The machining tests were performed under different cutting speeds, in dry and wet cutting conditions, on AISI 420 B stainless steel. The evolution of the tool wear and surface finish with cutting time have been monitored. The worn tools have been analysed by means of SEM and the results have been evaluated and discussed in detail. It was observed that the dry machining, as compared with wet cutting, allows the obtaining of lower tool wear values and a surface finish behaviour dependent on cutting time.

Abstract

The paper aims at investigating the effect of lubrication-cooling condition in industrial finish face milling operations. The machining tests were performed under different cutting speeds, in dry and wet cutting conditions, on AISI 420 B stainless steel. The evolution of the tool wear and surface finish with cutting time have been monitored. The worn tools have been analysed by means of SEM and the results have been evaluated and discussed in detail. It was observed that the dry machining, as compared with wet cutting, allows the obtaining of lower tool wear values and a surface finish behaviour dependent on cutting time.
