Within the procedures for the seismic assessment of R/C buildings according to the PBSD method, a relevant source of response uncertainness consists in the variation in member capacities associated to the randomness of the mechanical parameters of the materials and of the geometrical parameters of the structural members. Heavy numerical simulation analyses should be carried out to characterize the response scattering, therefore a simplified procedure has been outlined and applied to R/C members. In this case the post-elastic behavior is usually modeled with plastic hinges and the uncertainty is defined through the probability distribution of parameters at a higher level: yielding and ultimate moment and curvature. A set of random configurations of a sample structure is generated, accounting for the uncertainties in member capacity. The simulations of the seismic response allow to define the scattering of the demand parameters through their PDFs and to express them in terms of fragility curves. Contrarily to the current assumption, results show a non negligible influence of mechanical and geometrical uncertainness.
