Vertical force developed during friction stir welding of AZ31 sheets was measured by means of a dynamometer consisting of three piezo-electric one-component force sensors fitted by two preloaded rigid plates. Then, the effect of the process parameters on the force versus time curves was investigated. To this purpose, friction stir welding experiments were performed with constant values of the rotational and welding speeds, varying in the ranges from 1200 to 2500 rpm, and from 30 to 100 mm/min, respectively. It was observed that the vertical force vs. time curves during the welding stage exhibits an almost steady state regime. Finally, the force value rises with increasing welding speed and decreasing rotational speed.
