The seismic protection of existing buildings through base isolation can be an effective solution taking into account the objectives for the conservation and re-use of the building. The base isolation of the existing structures, especially the masonry ones, put relevant problems in design and making requiring special solutions. The specific problems were investigated in detail with reference to a design case study and constructive solutions have been proposed. The seismic protection through the isolation technique leads to great opportunities for the safety of the occupants and also leads to interesting economic evaluations in terms of cost/benefit advantages in comparison with the conventional solutions.

Abstract
The seismic protection of existing buildings through base isolation can be an effective solution taking into account the objectives for the conservation and re-use of the building. The base isolation of the existing structures, especially the masonry ones, put relevant problems in design and making requiring special solutions. The specific problems were investigated in detail with reference to a design case study and constructive solutions have been proposed. The seismic protection through the isolation technique leads to great opportunities for the safety of the occupants and also leads to interesting economic evaluations in terms of cost/benefit advantages in comparison with the conventional solutions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
