Giuseppe De Lorenzo e il buddhismo

Giuseppe De Lorenzo was a geologist, translator of Buddhist texts and Schopenhauer, a great reader of Shakespeare and a Senator of the Kingdom. A multifaceted figure who has been discussed and even criticised, but who in fact remains of great interest both for the history of Neapolitan culture in the early 20th century and for the history of Buddhism in Italy. In 1981, the publisher Laterza republished, in an anastatic print, his "India and Ancient Buddhism", the first edition of which dates back to 1904, a Sanskritist of the value of Raniero Gnoli wrote: «Much, undoubtedly, has been done from the beginning of the century until today in the field of Buddhology, but De Lorenzo's presentation and analysis of Buddhism remains substantially accurate to this day».

Giuseppe De Lorenzo fu geologo, traduttore di testi buddistici e di Schopenhauer, grande lettore di Shakespeare e senatore del Regno. Una figura poliedrica che è stata discussa e anche oggetto di critiche, ma che di fatto resta di grande interesse sia per la storia della cultura napoletana agli inizi del Novecento che per la storia del buddhismo in Italia. Non a caso, quando nel 1981 l’editore Laterza ha ripubblicato, in stampa anastatica, il suo "India e buddhismo antico", la cui prima edizione risale al 1904, un sanscritista del valore di Raniero Gnoli ha scritto: «Molto, indubbiamente, è stato fatto dagli inizi del secolo fino ad oggi nel campo della buddhologia, ma la presentazione e l’analisi del Buddhismo del De Lorenzo resta a tutt’oggi sostanzialmente esatta».
