DIID 68/19 -Design and Art. This work intends to examine, through the discipline’s tools tied to the study of design and art history, the works of one of the most important Fiber Art movement artists, Valeria Scuteri. The artist’s work, who moved to Piedmonte many years ago, moves across the employment of innovative materials and manufacturing techniques, some of which are very antique.This way, the artist connects two worlds: the world of art and the world of artisanship, and two historical times: past and present. Byusing non-conventional materials, she sees fashion and design objects that constitute themselves outside their daily use. That is the case of potentially wearable gowns and accessories that openly summon mass-consume objects, but thatare conceived outside their usual employment value. Valeria Scuteri’s Fiber Art inserts itself in that dichotomy between design objects and art work that has crossed the entire history of consumption and art of the past century radicalizing their positions and showing its aporiae. The work of the artist finds place within a long Italian tradition tied to yarn-made products, a very ancient tradition that Scuteri revolutionizes by creating real design objects that keep trace of their manual production as well. The analysis will therefore lead to recognize in the artist’s work the making of particular performing objects that symbolically live with the bodies and the actions they carry out.
DIID 68/19 - Design e Arte. Questo lavoro intende indagare, attraverso gli strumenti delle discipline legate allo studio del design e alla storia dell’arte, la produzione di una della più importanti artiste legate al movimento della Fiber Art ovvero Valeria Scuteri. L’opera dell’artista, piemontese d’adozione, si muove attraverso l’utilizzo di materiali innovativi e tecniche di manifattura anche molto antiche. In questa maniera l’artista mette in connessione due mondi: quello dell’arte e quello dell’artigianato, e due tempi storici: il passato e il presente. Attraverso l’utilizzo di materiali non convenzionali ella concepisce oggetti di moda e di design che si costituiscono al di fuori del loro uso quotidiano. È il caso degli abiti e degli accessori potenzialmente indossabili che richiamano apertamente agli oggetti dei consumi di massa ma che vengono concepiti al di fuori del loro valore d’uso. La Fiber Art della Scuteri si inserisce all’interno di quella dicotomia tra oggetti di design e opera d’arte che ha attraversato l’intera storia dell’arte e dei consumi del secolo scorso radicalizzandone le posizioni e mostrandone le aporie. Il lavoro dell’artista si colloca all’interno di una lunga tradizione italiana legata ai prodotti di filatura, tradizione molto antica che la Scuteri rivoluziona producendo veri e propri oggetti di design che allo stesso tempo portano le tracce della loro produzione manuale. Per questo l’analisi ci porterà a riconoscere nel lavoro dell’artista, la produzione di particolari oggetti performativi che vivono in modo simbiotico con i corpi e con le azioni che questi ultimi compiono.
