This paper deals with the interrelations of spiritual and psychological dimensions in Jouve’s Paulina 1880 (published in 1925). Deeply influenced by mystical tradition, the novel combines the genre of hagiography with modern writing techniques for representing inwardness. The spiritual vocabulary is used here to express psychological issues. The aim of the article is to examine the textual effects of this contamination (in the construction of the protagonist’s diary, in the use of interior monologue and, more generally, at the lexical level) and to identify some previous literary models of this association between psychological questions and spiritual language. From this perspective, the reli- gious tradition ends up being considered, in Jouve’s novel, as an equivalent of romanesque: fueling the characters’ imagination, it inspires fantasies of identification with religious figures.

Abstract
This paper deals with the interrelations of spiritual and psychological dimensions in Jouve’s Paulina 1880 (published in 1925). Deeply influenced by mystical tradition, the novel combines the genre of hagiography with modern writing techniques for representing inwardness. The spiritual vocabulary is used here to express psychological issues. The aim of the article is to examine the textual effects of this contamination (in the construction of the protagonist’s diary, in the use of interior monologue and, more generally, at the lexical level) and to identify some previous literary models of this association between psychological questions and spiritual language. From this perspective, the reli- gious tradition ends up being considered, in Jouve’s novel, as an equivalent of romanesque: fueling the characters’ imagination, it inspires fantasies of identification with religious figures.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
