This paper presents a comparative analysis of the conjunctive phrases that introduce final clauses in German and Italian, a phenomenon that is seldom described in dictionaries and traditional grammars. The phenomenon of conjunctive phrases is first defined and then several conjunctive phrases belonging to semantic classes that express purpose are described. In this paper I demonstrate that in German and Italian the conjunctive phrases of purpose are free structures, as the complex sentences in which they occur can be transformed. The applied transformations are based on the possibility of actualizing nominal predicates by means of support verbs, which means that nominal predicates are sentence reductions.
