This essay aims to outline a (possible) reconstruction of the defensive strategy undertaken by Weber and by Marx against the accusation of offering, respectively, an exclusively spiritualistic (Weber) or an exclusively economistic (Marx) interpretation of history. The conclusion shows how the theoretical positions of Weber and Marx can be regarded as convergent from a scientific point of view, whereas, from a political point of view, they result to be radically divergent.

Abstract

This essay aims to outline a (possible) reconstruction of the defensive strategy undertaken by Weber and by Marx against the accusation of offering, respectively, an exclusively spiritualistic (Weber) or an exclusively economistic (Marx) interpretation of history. The conclusion shows how the theoretical positions of Weber and Marx can be regarded as convergent from a scientific point of view, whereas, from a political point of view, they result to be radically divergent.
