In this paper I will compare two different types of minority languages in Italia: a bilingual region, such as South Tyrol, and a linguistic enclave, such as Cimbrian in Luserna. The paper aims at discussing the different sociolinguistic conditions and the language policies adopted in the examined areas, as well as the role of German in the two communities.
