Family papier-mâché businesses represent artisanal economic entities that, although limited in the Italian context, provide a source of value community in which they operate through their artistic production. This study aims to analyze the importance of relational synergies and cooperation for research and development in this specific type of business. The objective of the hypothesis is to identify how the development of constructive relationships between internal human resources, including in terms of cohesion towards the local community, and cooperation between businesses for research and development, tends to promote improved performance. After reviewing the literature and taking into consideration the reflections emerging also from the case studies, a questionnaire was administered to three family papier-mâché businesses. The results confirmed the research hypotheses, also identifying some related challenges. This research, although limited due to the small sample size of the businesses involved in the questionnaire administration, has managerial implications. Its originality stems from its historical treatment of the topic, which refers to a type of family business that has not yet been extensively explored.
