In an era increasingly characterized by globalization, integration, and information technology, the economy is increasingly dependent also on knowledge and among other things, on innovative challenges, which must be implemented responsibly with the aim of achieving efficient resource allocation. In this context, patents, which also provide an incentive for invention, take on fundamental and strategic importance for communities and businesses, as they can generate value both for the inventor and for others through the dissemination of knowledge. This paper, characterized by the absence of quantitative analysis and intended to contribute to studies on the topic, therefore analyzes the function of the patent system in relation to innovation and businesses, also through the discussion of economic theories and the detection of patent diffusion.

Abstract
In an era increasingly characterized by globalization, integration, and information technology, the economy is increasingly dependent also on knowledge and among other things, on innovative challenges, which must be implemented responsibly with the aim of achieving efficient resource allocation. In this context, patents, which also provide an incentive for invention, take on fundamental and strategic importance for communities and businesses, as they can generate value both for the inventor and for others through the dissemination of knowledge. This paper, characterized by the absence of quantitative analysis and intended to contribute to studies on the topic, therefore analyzes the function of the patent system in relation to innovation and businesses, also through the discussion of economic theories and the detection of patent diffusion.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
